ASHEBORO, N.C.-September 29, 2009-To celebrate the grand opening of its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Asheboro, N.C., the Malt-O-Meal Company, the nation’s largest family owned cereal company, is sending out a call to North Carolinians to help combat hunger by participating in a new cereal donation program, Million Bowls®.

The company announced today at a grand opening ceremony that Malt-O-Meal is moving quickly to help urgent demand at North Carolina food banks by donating the first one million bowls. North Carolinians are now being challenged to step up to the bowl and match Malt-O-Meal’s donation by purchasing any variety of Malt-O-Meal cereal and registering their purchases online at www.MillionBowls.com to reach a donation goal of a second million servings of Malt-O-Meal cereals.
For every registered consumer purchase through the end of 2009, Malt-O-Meal will donate ten servings of cereal to North Carolina food banks. Hunger in North Carolina is a serious subject. Recent studies in North Carolina estimate 1.6 million people live in poverty, including more than 437,000 children and 117,300 seniors. Nearly one in every five children in North Carolina is categorized as either food insecure or hungry. Statewide demand for food assistance has increased 40 to 76 percent just in the last year. “Malt-O-Meal has a long-standing commitment to food banks,” says Chris Neugent, Malt-O-Meal President and CEO. “And to celebrate our newest plant opening in North Carolina, we’re honored to sponsor this program. Malt-O-Meal is in the business of feeding families, including those families that can’t afford to buy our cereals. And we look forward to sponsoring the Million Bowls program here annually to help our new neighbors here in North Carolina.” The new Asheboro facility created 133 jobs in the area, and is producing two brands of Malt-O-Meal ready-to-eat cereals, Malt-O-Meal® Frosted Mini Spooners® cereal and Malt-O-Meal® Frosted Flakes cereal. “Having a complete breakfast is the best way to begin each day. But obtaining enough high-quality cereal is always difficult for food shelves, and when we do have the inventory, our partner agencies go through it quickly,” says Clyde Fitzgerald, executive director, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. “Malt-O-Meal’s commitment to share its cereal production with the state’s food banks is a very significant benefit to those who need food assistance. The Million Bowls partnership between North Carolina consumers and Malt-O-Meal will go a long way to helping us eradicate our serious problem of hunger.” Consumers can visit the more than 1200 North Carolina retail locations providing in-store merchandising support for Million Bowls, including Bi-Lo, Bargain Town, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Galaxy, IGA, Ingles, Lowes Foods, MDI-supplied independent grocery stores, Nash Finch-supplied independent grocery stores, Piggly Wiggly, Rite Aid, Super Target,Wal-Mart, Maxway, Pope’s, Roses, Super Dollar, Super 10, and Treasure Mart. Consumers can also track daily progress toward the program’s donation goal of 2,000,000 servings at www.MillionBowls.com, by becoming a fan at www.facebook.com/MaltOMeal and by following the program on Twitter at www.twitter.com/MaltOMealCereal. They include MANNA FoodBank, Asheville; Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, Charlotte; Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, Winston-Salem; Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina, Fayetteville; Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, Raleigh; Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, Raleigh; and Food Bank of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City. These food banks support feeding programs at local charitable agencies, and serve all 100 counties in North Carolina, providing food for an estimated 1,098,200 people annually.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN September 10, 2009 – Minneapolis-based Malt-O-Meal Company, the largest family owned cereal manufacturer in the country, today announced a new partnership with TerraCycle, an upstart up-cycling company that takes packaging materials and turns them into affordable, high quality goods. The partnership will create 1,250 Malt-O-Meal Cereal Bag Brigades in elementary and secondary schools across the country.

Malt-O-Meal Cereal Bag Brigades will function as collection sites for post-use Malt-O-Meal cereal bags and help prevent a significant amount of packaging waste from going into landfills. Individuals or school groups can sign up to sponsor a Brigade, with proceeds to benefit a designated school, school-sponsored club, or school-sponsored special interest group. There is no cost to start a Brigade, and all shipping costs are paid. For every Malt-O-Meal cereal bag collected and upcycled through TerraCycle, the designated school will receive a $.02 donation from TerraCycle.

“Bags create 75% less packaging to dispose of than comparable cereal box packaging that includes both a box and an inside bag*,” said Paul Reppenhagen, Director of Marketing. “Now, for every Malt-O-Meal cereal bag that is collected and returned to TerraCycle, we can reduce that packaging waste to zero.”

Malt-O-Meal makes over 25 varieties of ready-to-eat cereal including some of the country’s most popular cereals. All Malt-O-Meal cereal varieties can be collected and upcycled by Malt-O-Meal Cereal Bag Brigades.

To learn more about Terracycle or to sign up to sponsor a Malt-O-Meal Cereal Bag Brigade, go to http://www.terracycle.net/brigades/21-Malt-O-Meal-Cereal-Bag-Brigade-

At Malt-O-Meal, we’re continually looking for ways to be better stewards of our natural resources and our environment. We look for ways to conserve energy, consume fewer natural resources, and leave less behind. And, we believe that everyone can make a difference by making small changes in their daily habits.

What are we doing?

➢ Our convenient re-sealable bags contribute significantly to a reduction in materials and disposable waste. Each year, there are about 2.5 billion cereal boxes sold in the United States. If even half of those boxes were bags, we’d save 90,000 tons of paperboard.* The energy saved could power over 11,000 homes for a year. It would eliminate 170 million gallons of waste water. By eliminating the exterior box, we’ve reduced the amount of packaging that consumers need to dispose of by 75%!**

➢ We’re working hard to reduce the resources we use to produce and package our cereal products. We have active programs to reduce energy and minimize water use at our Northfield, Minnesota plant. Since 1996, we have reduced the water used to make cereal by 41% and we’ve reduced our energy use by 10%. That adds up to millions of gallons of water and KWh of energy saved through conservation.

➢ We have many recycling programs throughout our company, and over 99% of the waste in our Northfield plant is recycled.

What can your family do?

Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. They’re more energy efficient and last longer, so they’ll save you money in the long run.

Check dishwasher settings. Choose “air dry” or “no heat dry” to save energy.

Shorten your showers. Every minute in the shower uses four to six gallons of water. Cut our daily shower by just one minute and you’ll save about 1,500 gallons in a year.

Heat leftovers in a microwave. Faster heating equals less energy.

Wait for the full load. Whether cleaning dishes or clothes, run your machine only when you have a full load.

Shut down and unplug. Computers use energy even when turned off and chargers use energy if you leave them plugged in when not in use. On any appliance, a glowing light means energy is being used.

Recycle. When you can’t reduce or reuse, recycle. Understand your neighborhood program to make the most of it.

Minimize idle time. When waiting to pick the kids up, turn off your car to save gas and reduce emissions.

Put on a sweater. Save 5% for every degree you turn down your thermostat in the winter.

Donate used clothing, toys and household items. If you can’t use it, perhaps someone else can.

___________________________________________________________________

*Environmental impact estimates were made using the Environmental Defense Fund Paper Calculator. For more information, visit www.papercalculator.org.

** Based on the net weight of empty consumer packaging of comparable size packages. Even when their box size is smaller, the net weight of their box and empty inner bag is still greater than the net weight of the larger Malt-O-Meal bag when empty.

Conceived as a signature work of public art for the City of Northfield, “Harvest” forms a contemporary link to Northfield’s past and pays homage to its continuing presence as a mill town on the Cannon River. The one and a half ton cast bronze sculpture was commissioned for the site from local sculptor, Raymond Jacobson.

As the centerpiece in the city’s Sesquicentennial Legacy Plaza, “Harvest” celebrates Northfield’s agricultural heritage on the occasion of its 2005 sesquicentennial. In 1855, John Wesley North founded Northfield and built a dam and lumber mill on the Cannon River. Over the years, subsequent owners built a new, greatly expanded mill and introduced steam power in 1879. The mill became known as the Ames Mill.

In 1927, John Campbell took over the Ames Mill and began production of Malt-O-Meal hot cereal for the Campbell Cereal Company. In 1953, the company changed its name to the Malt-O-Meal Company. Today, the Ames Mill continues to manufacture Malt-O-Meal Hot Wheat Cereal.

The Malt-O-Meal Company and the Campbell family heirs sponsored the casting of “Harvest”. The Northfield Area Foundation contributed the monolith, with additional funding provided by the 2005 Sesquicentennial Committee and generous individuals in the community. The City of Northfield and the Northfield Historical Society served as co-sponsors of the Sesquicentennial Legacy Project.

The Malt-O-Meal Company hosted its annual Cereal Day For United Way event in the IDS Center’s Crystal Court on October 2nd. 25,000 bags of the company’s popular cereal varieties were sold to the public for $1.00 each.

Proceeds were contributed to the Greater Twin Cities United Way, matched by an equal contribution by the Malt-O-Meal Company of $1.00 for every bag of cereal sold. Since the first event in 2003, Malt-O-Meal has sold over 175,000 bags of cereal, generating contributions of over $180,000 to the Greater Twin Cities United Way. Cereal Day For United Way was promoted in advance to downtown businesses by the Greater Twin Cities United Way.

The event was staffed by Malt-O-Meal employees, including many senior executives, and featured a giant display of cereal bags that measured 60′ wide by 30′ high. Within six hours, the display was sold out. “We look forward to this event every year,” said Chris Neugent, Malt-O-Meal’s CEO, “and we are proud to be part of this enthusiastic downtown community that shows its support for the Greater Twin Cities United Way by participating in Cereal Day For United Way.” The company recorded over 4,300 sales transactions.
