In today’s world there are so many things holding us back from including kids exercise in our children’s lives. We have…

  • Long hours at work – we just want to relax, so children relax with us.
  • Kids have tons of homework giving them less play time.
  • Internet and online Chats
  • Video Games
  • Tons of TV shows

Plus, for parents the fear of the outside World can be keeping us from the kids running around outside. It seems to me, and many other mothers that I know, that we want to protect our kids from strangers to the point that we keep them inside instead of letting them run around outside.

When my sister and I were growing up we spent most of our play time outside. After we were done with homework and chores we immediately would head outside to play and ride bikes with the neighborhood children. After dinner we were back outside again until dark. Times were different and children were getting a lot of exercise after school. Today…. not as much.

But, this doesn’t mean that exercise can’t be included in our children’s lives. It just makes it more of a challenge, but it can be done. And, truly it has to be done because our children need physical fitness. The benefits of making sure your kids exercise go way beyond just the physical benefits. There are plenty of Physical, Emotional and even Intellectual benefits of exercise as well.

With a little bit of work and thought you can not only include exercise in your children’s lives, but you can show them how much fun exercise can be so they can grow up to be happy and healthy adults.

I played this all the time when I was young and the workout was amazing. But, truthfully I had no idea. I just knew it was fun.

  32. Raking leaves

    Wonderful post, Shana! As you point out, there are many, many reasons why children need to be physically active — besides the fact that they were born to move! And these are only SOME of the benefits…

    I would just ask parents to be aware that some of the activities above either involve a lot of waiting/nonparticipation (like Duck, Duck, Goose and kickball) and others involve elimination (like the traditional versions of Simon Says), which also results in nonparticipation. If children are going to be continually active, such games need to be modified. But it’s simple enough to do! With Simon Says, for example, the children can play in either two circles or two lines. When a child moves without Simon’s “permission,” she or he simply moves from one circle or line to the other!

    @Rae Pica -

    Thank you so much Rae for leaving your excellent comment. You are right about that. Many of the games I mentioned do have children waiting or not playing at one point or the other. Some younger kids might not have the patience for that or get antsy waiting. I love your idea of having children playing in two separate circles/lines so that they are not only always moving, but also always participating at something.

    Thank you so much for leaving a comment. Stop back anytime Rae.
